Chandler High School Boys Choir Performs at 2012 Mid-Winter Convention in Tucson

About 25 young men from the Chandler High School Choral Music program, under the direction of Lori Lyford performed at the Midwinter Convention held in Tucson AZ, Jan 21, 2012

These young men called the boys "Treble Makers" is a spin off from the ever growing and populer female Treblemakers of the High School.   The young men have only been together for a few months but their new found love for singing barbershop has been a joy to this new class recently added to the Chandler music curriculum.

The young womens group also attended the convention and got the opportuinity to sing the night before the boys competition and quickly were the talk of the conference.  It was also a great scene with such a large "fan base" of women screaming and supporting their school and music program.  Director Lori Lyford also happens to be the director of the gold medal winning Sweet Adelines "Scottsdale Chorus".

The young mens chorus was also given coaching in preparation to the Midwinter convention my members of the PHX! Quartet (Mark Ewing, Lenny Miller, Mark House, and Curt McLees.  Also giving coaching to the group was Gary Steinkamp, the director of the Spirit of Phoenix Mens Chorus.

Arizona Places 9th at 2011 BHS Mid-Winter Contest

By Curt McLees

The young men's chorus competed in the Mid-winter youth chorus festival this weekend in Las Vegas.  Their debut competition performance netted a very respectable overall score of 68.5, ninth place overall.  With 18 young men on stage, the supportive barbershop audience gave the chorus a standing ovation for their performance of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, the last song in their three-song set.

With rehearsal space unavailable, the chorus rehearsed Saturday morning by squeezing into a suite of one of the chorus supporters.  At the rehearsal, words of encouragement and best wishes were delivered by SOP president Terry Aramian, Scottsdale Sweet Adeline's director Lori Lyford, and district representatives John Krizek, Ted Sayle and Gordon Berthold.

This Mid-winter convention set attendance records with close to 700 contestants crossing the stage from 4 countries.  The Harmony Foundations festival has received over $1,850,000.00 in donations from choruses and individuals to help fund the youth festival and by every measure was an unparalleled success.

Winning the youth contest was the Northwest Vocal Project which is the only other BHS-chartered barbershop youth chorus other than Westminster.  The seniors quartet contest took place on Friday with our new 2011 Senior Quartet Champion Over Easy, from the Johnny Appleseed District.

The Arizona Spirit leadership is now setting its sights on planning for the 2011 & 2012 calendar with major emphasis on recruiting and organizing a youth harmony workshop.  In addition, there are a number of the young men that have expressed interest in joining the SOP for the upcoming international competition.  Further follow up is needed to answer questions they may have.

As a group, these are talented young men with a solid barbershop beginning that can enrich their lives and those around them for years to come.  The first milestone has been successfully reached, but the work needs to continue to spread the wonderful hobby of barbershop.
